Mast General Store prides itself on being a destination that takes our guests on a journey. It’s one of many reasons we value our communities – their histories, cultures, Main Streets, outdoor spaces, and, most of all, their people – and strive to fill the role of a traditional general store by serving as a gathering place where everyone can come together and feel a sense of common spirit. ...read more

We can all agree that technology is good. After all, without technological advancements, we would all be carding and spinning yarn to weave cloth for making our own clothes, walking everywhere we go, and books would be very expensive and hard to come by. While we’re not advocates for Luddite living, there are some old-fashioned ways of doing things that should continue to be practiced every day. ...read more

When you pause and let your mind wander, where does it go? Maybe it goes to a time far away to a family trip to the lake. Perhaps it moseys off to summer days spent at your grandparents’ house. Possibly it drifts back to an amusement park visit with brothers, sisters, and the whole family. Wherever it goes, it always seems to be a summer place. Evidently, warm weather makes warm memories. ...read more

... Our favorite foods! Food is universal because everybody’s got ta eat! Even before we bought the Mast General Store, we were taken by the beauty of Valle Crucis. We’ve heard people describe the drive out Broadstone Road as traveling through a time portal. In the 1970s, fields in the river bottoms would be filled with tobacco, cabbage, or high with hay to feed cattle that were grazing in the summer pasture. ...read more

The lucky few who have seen the Earth from a different perspective – astronauts - all echo the same viewpoint upon their return. Yuri Gagarin, a Russian cosmonaut and the first human to go to space, commented, “Orbiting Earth in the spaceship, I saw how beautiful our planet is. People, let us preserve and increase this beauty, not destroy it.”

Week 7 is the last reporting week for this year's Fall Foliage Primer. As we close the books on the fall color season, Knoxville is just now hitting its peak, as is Greenville. They will enjoy color for a little while longer. Asheville, Waynesville, and Hendersonville are a little past their high color line. There are some pockets of color that will sneak up on you. The Valle Crucis and Boone area are at the beginning of stick season, but that isn't stopping some of the oaks from showing off their true colors. Check the report for some ideas on scenic drives and fun events. Remember, November 11 is Veterans Day. ...read more

It's Week 6 of the Fall Foliage Primer, and peak colors are in our sights in Waynesville, Asheville, and Hendersonville. We're betting that Greenville and Knoxville are getting ready to hit the mark in just a little bit. The Boone and Valle Crucis area has passed its peak color, but there are splashes here and there that are surprising. Week 5 of the Fall Foliage Primer is seeing more color in all locations. Yep, hard to believe! Asheville, Waynesville, and Hendersonville are stretching to reach peak color in the near term. The Boone and Valle Crucis areas have some substantial leaf loss, but reds, oranges, and yellows are still popping up and are pretty prominent (particularly in the lower elevations). Greenville and Knoxville are still waiting for lots of color, but it is appearing slowly. All areas have lots of fun events in store including ghost walks, pumpkin carving, and beautiful hikes. ...read more

Week two of the Fall Foliage Primer is here, but a lot more color is not. Higher elevations around Graveyard Fields or Grandfather Mountain have more color, but in general we are seeing some reds and yellows hanging around with the getting-ready-to-get-started greens. While the leaves an event in themselves, there are many more happenings in our communities that our reporters hope to help you discover. ...read more
