The Holiday Season brings people together through shared traditions. We watch children’s faces light up with joy and wonder as they wait in line to share their wish lists with Santa Claus. We gather with our neighbors along city sidewalks for festive parades and in town squares for Christmas tree lightings. We attend services, plays, pageants, concerts, choir performances, and countless other holiday-themed events, too, all to keep the spirit of the season alive in our hearts and in our communities from year to year. ...read more

Even before we bought the Mast General Store, we were taken by the beauty of Valle Crucis. We’ve heard people describe the drive out Broadstone Road as traveling through a time portal. In the 1970s, fields in the river bottoms would be filled with tobacco, cabbage, or high with hay to feed cattle that were grazing in the summer pasture. ...read more

The lucky few who have seen the Earth from a different perspective – astronauts - all echo the same viewpoint upon their return. Yuri Gagarin, a Russian cosmonaut and the first human to go to space, commented, “Orbiting Earth in the spaceship, I saw how beautiful our planet is. People, let us preserve and increase this beauty, not destroy it.”

One of the best things about the holiday season is the way it brings people together. After spending a couple of years cautiously apart, we’re gradually and safely getting back to our favorite shared hometown traditions this year. For instance, we couldn’t be more thrilled for the return of Santa Claus to several Mast Store locations. Seeing the beaming face of every child in line waiting to sit on Santa’s lap and share their Christmas wish list fills us with delight and hope and makes us feel like a kid all over again, too! ...read more

If you’re a child of the ‘80s, you might remember “Workin’ for a Livin’,” a song by Huey Lewis and the News that paid tribute to the work-a-day folks that keep our lives moving forward. The same sentiment can be applied to the work of land trusts – they are workin’ for OUR livin’. ...read more

If you’ve never been to Roanoke, Virginia, you wouldn’t realize just how much a railroad defines the city. Series of rail lines consolidate and cut through the northern edge of downtown. They span east and west across the mountain valley where Roanoke lies. The same rail that built the city into the place it is today will carry those stories along the track into its future and, at the same time, bring new stories along the way. ...read more
