Have you ever thought you had a pretty good idea how something came about only to find out that, well, it’s complicated. That is the story of bluegrass music – which, by the way, wasn’t even referred to as “bluegrass” until well into the 1940s. This music, most associated with the Appalachian Mountains and the working class, is a long tale of shared influences, forks in the road, and happy reunion gatherings. ...read more

Even before we bought the Mast General Store, we were taken by the beauty of Valle Crucis. We’ve heard people describe the drive out Broadstone Road as traveling through a time portal. In the 1970s, fields in the river bottoms would be filled with tobacco, cabbage, or high with hay to feed cattle that were grazing in the summer pasture. ...read more

The lucky few who have seen the Earth from a different perspective – astronauts - all echo the same viewpoint upon their return. Yuri Gagarin, a Russian cosmonaut and the first human to go to space, commented, “Orbiting Earth in the spaceship, I saw how beautiful our planet is. People, let us preserve and increase this beauty, not destroy it.”

Join us for a humdinger of a Grand-Opening celebration at our newest "old" location in Winston-Salem! If you were there for our ribbon-cutting on Friday, May 8th, you'll know that we're very excited to be your new neighbors at 516 North Trade Street. We have a big weekend planned at Mast Store Winston-Salem and hope you'll make time to stop by and say hello!
We're excited about carrying on the legacy of the old Brown-Rogers-Dixson Hardware Store, which once inhabited the building. It was the city's largest retailer when it opened in 1928. In addition, it was also one of the South's largest retail/wholesale floors. B-R-D's motto was "The Best Place to Get It." We hope to carry on their fine tradition in a city that is vibrant, alive, and welcoming.
Like every store in the Mast Family, the Winston-Salem location offers everything from southern staples like Moonpies and RC Colas to outdoor gear, shoes, and clothing for the entire family. We also offer many local favorites: Old Mill of Guilford grits and cornmeal, Buck O'Hairen's Sunshine (kept chilled for maximum refreshment in our old-fashioned cooler), and Fulton and Roark's solid men's cologne just to name a few.
The people that will be taking care of you all have deep roots in the community. Zach, general manager, hails from Boone, is an avid cyclist (he bikes to the store every day), and managed local retailers, Magnolia Bikes and Mock Orange Bikes, before joining us at Mast. Laura, Mercantile department manager, is coming home in a sense. She served in that same role at the Boone Store for the last several years. Laura grew up in the Triad and studied at Guilford Tech and Randolph Community College. Jackie, the Fashion Department manager, brings a wealth of retail experience from her 18 years at Belk’s. Leigh, the store’s Outdoor department manager rounds out the group with her 12 years of experience working with the Great Outdoor Provision Co.
Mark your calendars to catch live music performed by local bands on all three days including:
George Smith - May 15, 5 p.m. - 7 p.m.
Justin Crissman & Bryan Bogenberger - May 16, Noon - 2 p.m.
Andrew Eversole - May 16, 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. & May 17, 3 p.m. - 5 p.m.
BINGO - May 17, 1 p.m. - 3 p.m.
Add your name to our e-mailing lists for a chance to win a $500 Mast Store Gift Card.
Parking is available in the 6th/Cherry-Trade Street Deck. Enter our side door off of the garage’s 2nd level.
