Martin Luther King, Jr. is the first modern private citizen to be honored with a federal holiday. It was a long struggle to set aside the third Monday in January as a day to honor and celebrate a man who advocated for not only racial equality but also economic equality and for all people to be treated with respect and dignity. While the legislation to set aside the day was signed by Ronald Reagan in 1983, its first official celebration was on January 18, 1986, and it took until 2000 for all 50 states to recognize it as a state government holiday. ...read more

Even before we bought the Mast General Store, we were taken by the beauty of Valle Crucis. We’ve heard people describe the drive out Broadstone Road as traveling through a time portal. In the 1970s, fields in the river bottoms would be filled with tobacco, cabbage, or high with hay to feed cattle that were grazing in the summer pasture. ...read more

The lucky few who have seen the Earth from a different perspective – astronauts - all echo the same viewpoint upon their return. Yuri Gagarin, a Russian cosmonaut and the first human to go to space, commented, “Orbiting Earth in the spaceship, I saw how beautiful our planet is. People, let us preserve and increase this beauty, not destroy it.”

It’s been said that “there’s something about the southland in the springtime.” New baby goats are arriving weekly at the Carl Sandburg National Historic Site in Flat Rock, NC. A pair of house finches who crafted a tidy nest on my porch weeks ago are now awaiting the arrival of their 5 chicks. The cherry blossom tree in the front yard is heavy with pink blooms. Everywhere you look, new life is bursting forth as winter transitions into spring. Our Mast Store communities are also celebrating the season with activities the whole family will enjoy. Below is an offering of a few of the many events we’re looking forward to enjoying this April.
Valle Crucis, NC
Throughout the month, get your toes tappin’ to delightful live music at the Original Store. The musicians cue up around noon and the entertainment lasts until 2 p.m. From Appalachian and old-time music to Celtic and bluegrass tunes, a couple hours of live music around the pot-bellied stove or on the back porch (weather permitting) is the perfect way to enjoy a spring afternoon in the High Country.
